Greatest Generation Anecdotes
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (May, 2002)
Author: Charles Day
Average review score:

Greatest Generation Anecdotes
After reading Charles Day's excerpt posted on the Xlibris website it is clear that he has crafter a sound and cohesive collection of interesting WW II anecdotes.

Greatest Generation Anecdotes
The book is different in that it tells much of the irony rather than of the hell of war. Much of the work is in the form of anecdotes, epigrams and like episodes in the context of the WW II era. It reads as though it is by somebody who lived and knows what he's writing about, serving as a court reporter and with the Army Field Historical Section in WW II in Ireland England, Wales, Scotland, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
In its own way it reminded a little of "Tales Of The South Pacific."

Green Was the Earth on the Seventh Day: Memories and Journeys of a Lifetime (Kodansha Globe)
Published in Paperback by Kodansha International (April, 1997)
Author: Thor Heyerdahl
Average review score:

past, present and future
I'd just like to second the comments from "a reader from USA" above. This book is so much more than is stated in the synopsis. While it begins as a very enjoyable adventure and exploration story, it takes the reader beyond the adventure to truths about the present and future that are insightful, important and stated in a way that is compelling to say the least.

I'd rate this book 10 stars if I could!
Simply one of the most heart-wrenching and haunting true adventure stories ever written. I was so moved after reading this wonderful book that I could hardly think of anything else for weeks. Nearing the end of this book, I was choking back tears, as Mr. Heyerdahl touches upon truths so profound that they are mind-boggling. He shows us the things that our society has tried so hard to forget. He powerfully reminds us why we should not ignore the trouble our planet is in. Thor Heyerdahl has to be one of the best people who has ever lived. Only a very, very, great man could write a book like this.

Guerilla Days in Ireland
Published in Paperback by National Book Network (November, 1995)
Author: Tom Barry
Average review score:

The standard work on guerrilla warfare for the last century.
The incredible career of Tom Barry and that of the West Cork Flying Column is an inspirational example of what virtually untrained volunteers fighting for their families and their country can achieve, even in the face of overwhelming odds. The British had over 12,500 men in West Cork chasing after about 310 IRA Volunteers...and never defeated them. Barry discusses many military topics and personal thoughts which the student of Irish warrior traditions will find extremely helpful. Members of many guerrilla movements around the world have read and profited from the lessons in this book including Che Guevera (whose last name was "Lynch" thanks to his Irish grandfather) and the early Jewish guerrillas in the Irgun and Lehi. Anyone interested in understanding the mindset of Irishmen bent on taking a stance and fighting for what they believe in, will be well rewarded for reading this book.

A must read for Irish historians
This on the scene writer grimly reveals the unbelieavable atrocities the English purpetrated on the Irish people in this century. This book is a beginning to the understanding of the relations between the English and the Irish. The actions taken by armed mercenaries, English military, and English puppet police against the Irish people in their own country is appalling and brings to mind Hitler's treatment of the Jews in Europe twenty years later. A must read for all who seek an understanding to the Anglo/Irish situation.

Guide to Sea Kayaking in North Carolina: The Best Day Trips and Tours from Currituck to Cape Fear (Regional Sea Kayaking Series)
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (April, 2001)
Author: Pam Malec
Average review score:

Fantastic book! Perfect for OBX Paddlers!
I have been going to the Outer Banks for over 20 years now but am new to kayaking. I was looking for a book about kayaking trips all along the Outer Banks. I found this one and bought it. I read through it and now I have a second copy of it so I can pull the maps out to take on my trips without destroying the original.

Pam Malec knows the area really well and has plotted some excellent trips to take. She also gives some great advice on things to watch out for (bugs in Ocracoke, tidal influences, high boat traffic areas, etc) and places to stay and eat in the area of the trips. The book also gives a few history lessons on the area and other interesting facts (Ever wonder about the origin of the marshmellow? Get this book and find out!)

With her book, I have planned three different trips for my next vacation to the area.

This is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it for anyone planning to kayak along the North Carolina coast.

An Excellent Regional Paddling Guidebook
If you are a coastal paddler who plans to visit the area near the Outer Banks of North Carolina, you will not want to be without this guide.

Pam Malec has compiled an excellent trip planning guide with over 30 day trip paddle plans. Each listing has a general map of the route and describes the required skill level for the trip, wildlife & landmarks of the area, launching and landing sites, safety issues, navigational aids, and camping, lodging & restaurant options. Each trip description also includes a page of local lore (including one about an attack swan!) which really adds to the depth of the guide and to each individual trip.

A chapter on the best kayak surfing spots in the area, safety and surf etiquette and appendices listing local events & paddling clubs, recommended reading, paddlesport rental/ instruction/outfitters, National & State Parks, reserves and refuges really make this an excellent and comprehensive regional paddling guide.

He Saves the Day
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group Juv (April, 2002)
Authors: Marsha Hayles and Lynne Woodcock Cravath
Average review score:

Boys will be Boys
This book captures the way a young boys imagination works, each moment a new adventure. The fun word play and bright pictures carries my kids along. Loads of fun.

EXPLORE A CHILD'S IMAGINATION!
Just a little boy playing with his dog in the backyard--or is it?
In this rhythmic romp through a child's playday, we see him become a pirate, a pilot, and a variety of other fanciful characters. In each instance, our hero is headed for certain doom when just in time--He saves the day!
Cravath's imaginative art includes everyday items that become something more through a child's eyes. (the wading pool is the sea, the cat is a jungle tiger)
Hayles and Cravath have certainly captured the world of a small boy.
Perfect for the little heroes in your life!

Henry and Mudge and the Best Day of All
Published in Hardcover by Recorded Books Unabridged (December, 1997)
Author: Cynthia Rylant
Average review score:

A Great Series for the Only Child
This long and growing series is terrific for all kids, but especially only children. Although Henry has no siblings and his best friends are his dog Mudge and his cousin Annie (also an only, apparently in a one-parent household), with the exception of the first book, the series does not dwell on his sibling-free status. It simply presents a well-adjusted kid enjoying a wide range activities. Henry is constructive with his time (but not so much as to be unrealistic; see "Henry and Mudge and the Long Weekend"), sociable, not prone to loneliness and never portrayed as pining for a little brother or sister. As the parent of an "only", I find the whole series great for subtly conveying an affirmative message without beating it over the head.
To be sure, Henry's is a somewhat idealized, white-kid, small-town life and the books are not entirely p.c. - the illustrations of the family car never seem to picture seat belts and Henry's diet apparently includes lots of hot dogs, potato chips and refined sugar. But as part of a wider reading program, Henry and Mudge provide a great series of simple chapter books to be read to youngsters or read by beginning readers.

What a party!
My children love this book. My 2 year old wanted this for hisbedtime story every night for 2 weeks. It is still one of hisfavorites. His 4 year old sister loves all of the Henry & Mudge books, but she especially loves this one. She keeps asking if we can have a pinata at her party. I like it because it is short enough for the whole book to be a bedtime story.

Hiking Missouri (America's Best Day Hiking Series)
Published in Paperback by Human Kinetics (T) (May, 1999)
Author: Kevin Lohraff
Average review score:

This book is much more than just a hiking guide.
This wonderful book is "a must," not just for hikers but also for nature lovers. More than an accurate and detailed guide, the book affords readers lush visual imagery through the descriptions of a skilled writer who, without doubt, loves the trails he treads.

Guaranteed to reawaken interest in Missouri adventures
I have been enjoying canoeing, kayaking, and camping in Missouri all my life, but every page of this book told me something I didn't know about my favorite state. This book is guaranteed to make the reader start making trip plans. This is a great gift book because it is a catalyst to further adventure.

Hire Power: The 6-Step Program to Get the Job You Need in 60 Days--Guaranteed!
Published in Paperback by Perigee (September, 1993)
Author: Irv Zuckerman
Average review score:

hire power
I have been out of work for several months. I would rate this as the very best book on how to land the job you want. At first I didn't agree with what I was reading. About half way through I got it! If you follow Mr. Zuckerman's method EXACTLY, You will get a job! I did and it was less than 60 days. I wish I had read the book when I first became un-employed rather than eight months later.

A must have book for anyone looking for a job!
I tried all the other "how to get a job" books. They were all a waste of money until I bought this book. A concise, easy to read, but very essential book that gets down to the "nitty-gitty" of how to get a job. Team up the book with a visit to the Career Forum on Compuserve where Irv and the career counselors give wonderful advise and support along with weekly on-line seminars and you have the best tools for finding a job. It is a "secret weapon."

The History of Louisa Barnes Pratt: Being the Autobiography of a Mormon Missionary Widow and Pioneer (Life Writings of Frontier Women Series, Vol 3)
Published in Hardcover by Utah State University Press (September, 1998)
Authors: Louisa Barnes Pratt and S. George Ellsworth
Average review score:

Wonderful!
I am Louisa Barnes Pratt's great-great-great-great granddaughter and my mother gave me this book to read a while ago. It is not only inspirational but it is a fascinating description of LDS History.

Wonderfully informative, interesting reading
This book follows a strong woman through a fascinating life filled with trials, tribulations, joys and surprises. It gives a view into the pioneer life from a, most of the time, single mother's perspective. Louisa Barnes Pratt is a testament to her faith in God and her will to follow her convictions and beliefs at any cost. I would recommend this book to anybody interested in history and women's issues!

A CELEBRATION IN PRINT!
A great reference for anyone who wants to add some depth to any holiday topic they are doing. Plus there are some celebrations that most of us don't even know about. The information is presented in informative and understandable style for older children to adults. I've used a few of the topics as additional information for some of my holiday cartoons on my website. One thing I thought a bit odd, it did not include Mardi Gras. Hmm? :)

Surveys over 900 symbols associated with over 200 holidays
This new edition of Sue Ellen Thompson's Holiday Symbols informatively surveys over 900 symbols associated with over 200 holidays around the world, providing an important reference to the origins, customs, traditions and histories of each and explaining the basics of each holiday.
